They are comprised of a wire core covered by layers of ceramic coatings, with the outer most coating defining the surface Work Function for emission of electrical charge, as well as the Catalytic Ionization characteristics of the surface.

DET has developed a family of Thermionic Ceramic Ion Sources with work functions ranging from low to high. These are used at various surface temperatures in the range of 300 to 1000o C, and in various inert, oxidizing, or combustive gas environments to achieve multiple modes of selective chemical detection.

Optimum GC Detector/Transducer Geometry
DET ion sources are designed for use in hardware that positions the ion source on the axis of an ion collector cylinder. Compatible electronics include a power supply to provide heating current and polarization voltage for the ion source, and an electrometer to measure ion current at the collector. Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector (NPD) equipment on Thermo, Agilent, and several other GC models is compatible with the use of all DET ion source types. In addition to state of the art NP detection, interchangeable DET ion sources greatly expand the potential applications of that same basic NPD equipment. Other modes include compounds containing O, Cl, Br, I, Sn, Pb, or Si atoms, or Thiol, Pyrrole, Nitro, Methylene, and certain other functional groups.
